FAQ About Classical Pilates
Frequently Asked Questions About Classical Pilates
What is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is the original Pilates method developed by Joseph Pilates, emphasizing his traditional exercises, sequencing, principles, and equipment. The method focuses on precision, control, concentration, breath, centering, and flowing movement. Classical Pilates is taught as a progressive system, with exercises building upon one another as your strength, coordination, and understanding develop.
What is the difference between Classical Pilates and Contemporary Pilates?
Classical Pilates follows the traditional Pilates repertoire and generally maintains the sequence and structure established by Joseph Pilates. Contemporary Pilates builds upon the original method and may incorporate additional exercises, props, modifications, and different sequencing.
At C.O.R.E. grow strong., we offer both Classical and Contemporary Pilates, allowing our clients to experience the benefits of each approach and find the style that best supports their goals.
Is Classical Pilates good for beginners?
Yes. Classical Pilates can be an excellent choice for beginners because the method provides a structured progression for learning the fundamental Pilates exercises and principles.
At C.O.R.E., our instructors meet you where you are and can modify exercises as needed. If you are completely new to Pilates equipment, private instruction can also be a great way to learn the fundamentals, become familiar with the equipment, and build confidence before joining a group class.
Is Classical Pilates harder than Contemporary Pilates?
Not necessarily. Classical and Contemporary Pilates can both provide a challenging full-body workout. The experience may feel different because Classical Pilates places a strong emphasis on traditional exercises, sequencing, transitions, precision, and control.
As your Classical Pilates practice develops, the method becomes increasingly challenging because you are learning to perform movements with greater strength, coordination, and control- not simply adding more exercises.
What equipment is used in Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates uses a variety of traditional Pilates apparatus, including the Reformer, Mat, Tower or Cadillac, and Chair. Each piece of equipment provides a different way to develop strength, mobility, stability, balance, coordination, and control.
At C.O.R.E., our Pilates studio in Greenville offers instruction across multiple pieces of Pilates equipment as part of our Classical and Contemporary Pilates programs. We even have lesser known equipment like the Spine Corrector, Ladder Barrel, Arm Chair, Pedo-Pull and Foot Corrector.
What is a Classical Pilates Reformer?
A Classical Pilates Reformer is the traditional Pilates apparatus developed from Joseph Pilates' original equipment. It uses a moving carriage, springs, straps, footbar, and other components to create resistance and assistance during exercises.
Classical Reformers differ from many contemporary Reformers in their design and how exercises and transitions are performed. The equipment is used as part of a larger Pilates system rather than simply as a machine for individual exercises. Specifically most classical Reformers work on springs all of the same weight with a "gritty" feel to the wheels and tracks so that you have to actually use your body and powerhouse to close it.
Why is sequencing important in Classical Pilates?
Sequencing is an important part of the Classical Pilates method because the exercises are designed to work together as a progressive system. Rather than treating every exercise as an isolated movement, Classical Pilates connects exercises through intentional transitions and builds upon skills developed earlier in the practice.
Repeating familiar exercises allows students to develop greater body awareness, strength, precision, and mastery of each exercise over time. Repetition reinforces learning.
Can I do Classical Pilates if I have never done Pilates before?
Absolutely. You do not need previous Pilates experience to begin.
If you are new to Pilates, our instructors can help you learn the foundational principles and become familiar with the equipment. We may recommend private instruction for some beginners, particularly those who want more individualized attention before participating in group classes. We even think private lessons are the Gold Standard in a Pilates practice.
What are the benefits of Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates can help develop full-body strength, core stability, mobility, balance, coordination, posture, body awareness, and movement control. Because the method emphasizes precision and intentional movement, it can also help you develop a deeper understanding of how your body moves in daily life and across all activities like tennis, running, golf, and even lifting and playing with kids and grandkids.
The goal is not simply to complete a workout. Classical Pilates is a practice of learning to move with greater control, strength, and awareness.
